Door Hinge Pin

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post.

I own a 1964 Austin Healey 3000 BJ 8. The doors do not line up properly and I found that the door hinge pin is broken. I looked at Moss parts and see that the pin alone is not available.

Does anyone have any idea where I can purchase just the pin?

We just started working on the car and no doubt I will come up with many additional questions and we proceed.

Thanks for your help,
Lynn Nace

Why don't you try to source a (complete) used door hinge?

You can either use it as it is, or rob it for the pin.

Ebay is the first place I'd look for one...

Welcome to the Forum Lynn, glad to hear from newbie's. Healey hinge pins aren't difficult to find, I had a local machine shop rebuild all my hinges, including replacing the hinge pins, for not a great deal of money. Make sure you mark where each one came off the door. There's a hole in the center of the hinge where the pin goes that should be periodically oiled. That's probably why it broke.

Now, can you tell me how to prononce the city you live in??

Lyn,
BJ8 hinges are hard to come by and expensive. However, earlier hinges are easier to find and much cheaper. Early 3000s and 100-6 s had identical hinges on top and bottom. BJ8 hinges are all aluminum, that is, both halves are aluminum, and the top hinge is differently shaped from the bottom hinge. One of the BJ8 hinges is identical in shape to the early cars - I believe it is the bottom hinge. If that is the hinge with a broken pin, then buy an early hinge and you are golden.
If your broken hinge is the top hinge, I would find an early hinge and rob the pin from that one. All of the pins are indentical.
So you ask, how does one have knowledge of such trivia. It is because we racers are always trying to shave off a couple of ounces. So, all of the hinges on my race car are lower BJ8 (all aluminum) hinges. And, the pins have been removed and replaced with special pins that I can readily remove to take my doors off when I work on the car.

Can you give us more information on these?

An aside. Is your '64 a single glass lens for running/directional light? What is your vin number. There were only about 850 phase 1's sent to the US. My phase 1 is 25508. Have you registered it with the BJ8 registry?

Thanks for the response.

Tunkhannock can be broken down as Tunk han nock. It is a small town near Wilkes Barre/Scranton Pa.

Great Lynn thanks for clearing that up. I love all the Indian names in the NE and never heard of that one.

Earlier, I forgot to mention that the car I had at the time was an earlier model, however, I still think a good machine shop would be able to replace the hinge pin.

Let us know what you end up doing, maybe a photo?

John, Those special pins I use - well - they are just long AN bolts. AN bolts of any length have longer shanks and are not threaded until the last 1/2 inch or so. On the lower hinge I just drop one in. On the upper hinge, there is not enough clearance on top to drop it in, so I push it up from below. I have drilled the end so I can use a washer and a hairpin clip to keep it from dropping out.
You should remember that I am talking about my race car here. My doors are aluminum and each weight about 8 pounds.

Darth,

No I did not get to the BJ 8 registry yet. Mine is to be a phase 1 also. Has single directional signal lens. I used the engine number to get a Heritage number which is HBJ8L28173. I am not positive this is the correct number because they say it was green. I do not find any green. I have a body plate showing 3184 BJ8. When we get it on the lift I will see if I can get number from shock.

Any other suggestions on how to verify the number?

Thanks,
Lynn
