Door Glass

Yesterday I drove my BJ8 to town, parked and shopped. Returned to the car and opened the passenger door to put in the groceries. The door glass which was down inside the door exploded with glass shards coming up out of the door and into the car. I haven't yet removed the door panel but can see the whole door glass is shattered. Yesterday was normal temperature and nothing strange nor any harsh cornering or bad bumps in the road in the trip into town. Any ideas as to why it might have happened and are there any tips I need in changing out the glass. I'll order a replacement today from AH spares. I'm in France.

Had the same thing happen on pass window about 20 years ago('67BJ8), girlfriend closed door after night out& glass exploded. I think nylon guide slipped out of channel& allowed window to cock. cheers Genos2

Hi Iam,

A friend had a similar experience and it was tracked to the pull handles he had installed a while back. It seemed that he did not have the original screws to mount the pull handles and used what he thought were replacements of similar sized. The difference was the originals were slightly shorter with a flat end. As time passed and the new panels conformed more closely to the door, the points of the screws began to press onto the glass. Since the glass was kept commonly down, the only indication of a problem came when one day the door was shut and the class shattered.

Thanks Ray and Keoke etc. Intersting what you say about the screws. I took the door apart today and the pull handle was fixed with one screw, which looked too long to me, and a blind rivet in the other end. I'll order new screws and nylon liners with the replacement window glass. I do have to slam the doors quite hard to close them, is this normal or can they be adjusted to close more easily?

No Ian, This is not normal and Yes they can be adjusted to close more easily:

1] the rubber door seal may be the wrong one and is too large in diameter.
Replace with the correct piece of hardware

2] The slotted locking pawl of the lock assy on the door may have become loose on its shaft due to wear.

This will require replacement or brazing to relocate it to its original required position and keep fixed.

3] The lock is just misadjusted and should have the plate on the chassis moved outboard a bit.

Thanks for that advice, I've just changed the door seals for smaller ones but I'll try to get a better adjustment of the door lock assembly when I put in the new glass. Still waiting on it's delivery.

Do you know the proper door seal diameter for my '64 3000? I have to replace mine anyway (the inner metal is somewhat mangled), and notice that there are several different sizes/types available. My doors are also a bit difficult to close.

Thanks,
Steve
