TR6 Door checkstrap racket

I decided to install new door checkstraps as part of my resto of a '72 TR6. Now, as I close the door and the checkstrap completes its travel over the spring clip, there is a terrific bang as (I assume) the 'tongues' slam back together. Is this normal for checkstraps on a TR6? Is there some kind of remediation? I'm almost tempted to put the old ones back in. They didn't hold the door open all that well but it didn't sound like the door was coming off when you closed it.
Thanks,
Ceedub

They do make a loud click when you close the door. A little lube will quit it down some. Most of the time I get into the car without pushing the door that far out so no click.
