Is there anyone who's willing to help me on the
'78 Datsun B210?I need to sort out the vacuum hoses, etc,
on the intake/exhaust manifold.
I made the dumb decision to convert it from A/C-
to non A/C.The "spaghetti" on it needs to be soted out/-
cleaned up.I have the factory microfiche/reader,so it can
be sorted out.
I also have a problem with one of the rear brakes.
I can get the drum on,but it won't turn.
I want to get this car running,& drive it for awhile,
but I've hit a few snags,& walked away from it.It's been tying
up the garage for 6+ years.
I can't pay more than a few hundred dollars. Can anyone
help me?

- Doug

You have a 78 B210? I didn't think any existed that hadn't turned to piles of rust by now! a 77 Datsun B210 was Mary's and my first new car! Drove the snot outta that thing! Great little car! But sorry, can't help with the issues.

I remember those vacuum hoses on the carb being quite a mess. Mostly though there is a hose to the vacuum advance, one to the heating system, one large one to the brake booster, and the rest to various things on the carb itself like deceleration valve, choke heater etc.

If your brake drum locks when installed, the shoes are a bit too far out. If they won't adjust in more, it's likely the parking brake cable could be rusted and stuck, otherwise the same could be said for the adjustor and wheel cylinder.

I would love to come fix it for you... free. Can you just send a plane ticket

Get on the "Ratsun" forum. There are folks in your area who live and breath Datsuns and would be happy to help.
BillM

Edit- I just saw that you already did that-

Doug:
First, if you get it running (chugging) and want to find a vacume leak,
Take a Propane torch (like we use for heating solder for plumbing),
do not light it, just turn it on. While the engine is running, wave the burner end around all the vacume lines, when you hear the engine change in tone,
where you are waving the propane, that is where you have a vacume leak.
Second, about the brakes, and I already know the answer, but I gotta ask.
Did you back down the pads to get the drum on?

I would come up and help you, but you are 722 miles away from me.

Doug, unless you have a burning desire to keep it all Datsun, why not look around for an adaptor or replacement manifold, and put a down draft weber?? The stock carb is/was a POS on it's best day, and the forest of vacuum hoses is just trouble waiting to happen. I'll have to look, but I think I have a couple of DGVs, and if so I will donate one to the cause.( probably need a rebuild kit, but easy to do) I'll let you know in a day or so. Some clever surgery to the air cleaner housing and you can likely re use that. Check that parking brake cable moves. Check that the shoes are on the right way, and the wheel cylinder moves. Try swapping the drums side to side. If I remember, you have parts cars no?? Remove ALL drums you have, take to machine shop and have them turned (Best couple). Man, if I was closer than 3000 miles I would fix it free.

Wish I was nearby Doug, I wouldn't mind dropping in to give a hand. Unfortunately The airfare would be more than I can handle right now.
Now if it would coincide with driving a mid 70s VW Westfailia back across country to keep here at my house, and I had said airfare money, I'd be discussing departure times already.

Vacuum leaks aren't an issue - yet.
I had the "bright" idea to junk all of the A/C parts,
so I have to figure out what it needs foe non-A/C.
I have the factory microfiche & a reader,so
I can figure it out (maybe).I'm also polishing/cleaning
everything as I go,so I've gotten a little overwehlmed.
I gone through & replaced almost every componet
with new/NOS parts. My original intent was to go through
everything,& drive it into the ground.
This was a free car,& I now have over $4000 into it-
I wish I would've put that into the Anglia instead.

Jesse,

It will need to be smogged when it's running again,
so I don't think that I could run an aftermarket carburator.
Tried to get ahold of you,as our Daughter needs someone
who know what they're doing,to make a list of what needs to be done
on her Volvo.Contact me when you have a chance.

Doug, while i am not the one to do it, knowing exactly squat about Datsuns, it strikes me that this would be a very cool opportunity for an inaugural OSHITS gathering. Occasional Spridget Handimen in Transit Skyping. Wouldn't take much to set up - wireless in the garage and a portable camera. Seems to me the next logical step for this hobby.

JP,

Can't figure out why I'd show up in a Datsun at a Spridget meet.
I'm in the middle of nowhere when it comes to getting help.

Hence the need for Skype.

Doug,

Sorry, I was out of town seeing relatives for a couple of days. My brother is down from Canadia.... I am unfamiliar with the exact ins and outs of California smogs rules. Do they require the exact, correct factory parts be in place,or is having the car pass the test sufficient?? I would wager that it will run better, and therefor cleaner with the DGV. If you have to use the factory stuff, make sure you are starting with a decent fresh carb. An old gummed up POS won't make anything easier. If all is well, there should be a sticker under the hood that shows all the vacuum hoses. Assuming you still have the parts car too, by careful checking of the AC car sticker, and non AC sticker you should be able to figure out what components need to remain. It will probably show things by initials, but who cares what it really means, as long as you can identify which widget is supposed to be there... Otherwise, what is the trouble you are encountering? Brackets and hoses, or wiring?? Take a couple of photos, and let us look, and maybe we can all figure it out. You will still have to turn the wrenches, but we should be able to sort the rest of it out.

I will try to call Saturday or Sunday. When are you likely to be around?

I had a brain flash today, and realized I had a Datsun repair manual that covered 70s cars. I promptly started a search to see where it was. it took about an hour, but I found it... but it turns out to be only for Z-cars 70-88.Drat! Blast!
Sorry Doug. sooo close. Unless this is another manual I didn't know I had, and the one I was thinking of is still hiding, we're outta luck.

Thanks everyone,for your help.
CARB (California Air Resources Board) reqiuers the
original,an "approved" carburator.
I have a factory shop manual,+ microfiche,
+ microfiche reader - now i'm smart enough to put it
all together.

oooooh! fish! I haven't used that since my job in parts at a Ford dealer. We still had all the heavy truck stuff on fiche (Everything else was on green-screen computers). Never failed, there was a scratch on the part number I needed.
