TR6 Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground strap?

Is the ground wire on the steering adequate or should there be another much thicker ground like on the TR3/4?

Moss diagrams don't seem to show one, but that doesn't seem right to me.

It is adequate as long as all of the other grounds are in tact.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

Worth adding a thicker one from the engine to the frame then?

Thanks guys.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

Something muddled here, the engine ground strap shouldn't connect to the steering column. The steering column has to be grounded for the horn to work, but it's not the engine block ground.

There may have been some variation over the years, but what I recall is Moss 736-270, which connects the engine block directly to the negative battery post (with a tab for grounding the body in the middle of it). IMO this is a much better arrangement than the separate straps (and starter current through the body) used on earlier TRs.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

So here is the deal - when I look at the TR4 I have a battrty to transmission housing ground and a thick braided cable from the front of the engine to the frame.

The '74 TR6 has the same battery to the transmission housing ground but a thick braided cable from the front of the engine to the frame.

The 74 TR6 does have a thin cable (ground it looks like) that attaches to the steering rack.

Com[aring the cars, and noting that the TR8 has the same thick braided cable from engine to front subframe area, I assumed that the '74 TR6 was missing an engine to frame ground.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

There is no thick(er) cable at the front of a TR6, just the braided battery cable at the rear.

I assumed (my fault again!!) that you were referring to the 12 ga. horn ground at the bottom of the column.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

There's a braided strap from engine to firewall, no?
That said, I have some very thick stuff going from engine to chassis, and still have problems with floating grounds - it's more of a problem with an ECU and FI, so you have to be a tad more careful...

TD, I added one to my '74..... It had a funky DPO setup for the ground, so I added a thick cable from engine to frame....

I believe that was added at some point. Original TR4 configuration would have been a short heavy cable from the battery to the body, plus the cable you mention at the front from engine to frame.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]The '74 TR6 has the same battery to the transmission housing ground
I believe there should be a tab in the middle of that cable, that attaches to the body.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:] but a thick braided cable from the front of the engine to the frame.
Sounds like another addition. Certainly won't hurt anything, but not necessary if the tab is grounded.
I would check with British Wiring. He seems to be a very knowledgeble chap and quite willing to help.

The one at the steering rack is the final path of the horn ground. It alongwith the coupler ground are needed for the toot to happen.

Well, yes, but it's the braided strap that comes from the negative battery post, below the head to the back of the block and then behind the throttle shaft to the firewall.

I had to take three pics because I couldn't get it clearly in one or two.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

Got it - tahanks Paul.

The TR3 an TR4 also have a similar braided cable at the front of the engine to the chassis, but it sounds like the TR6's do not.

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

(71 TR6) I have the cable from the bellhousing to the battery, with the extra loop in the middle of it that gets bolted to the body. I advise to make sure any ground straps with extra length are kept well away from danger of getting wrapped up in the steering column (potentially disastrous consequences!)

Re: Does a TR6 need an engine to chassis ground st

I agree. Mine is normally a lot closer to the head, but I moved it for illustrative purpose only so Tom could see the bolts.
