Does a BMW M3 or a Prius get better gas mileage?

Good point.

My TR6 gets infinite gas mileage. It is on blocks. How's that for driving style?

Tom's absolutely right!

And, the M3s have a MAJOR problem with fuel economy: it's virtually impossible to keep your foot off the accelerator in these cars. Can't do it!

These cars were made to drive fast, truly one of the planet's most drivable cars, IMHO.

Love those M3s! :yesnod:

Top Gear Series 11 from October 2008. They showed it on BBC America on Monday.

The test is a bit bogus though. The advantages of hybrids show up with stopping and starting - the use of regenerative braking, shutting down the engine at idle, that sort of thing. City milage on a hybrid can be better than highway. That said - the milage numbers from the Prius are really not that impressive - 40mpg? or there abouts. A good diesel will get 60 or 70 mpg. Top Gear did some "economy challanges" on the show and managed to get some remarkable miles squeezed out of the small diesel cars they sell in Europe. Pitty we don't get them here in the Colonies.

And while we are on this topic - what is it with the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid! Put a dinky little electric motor on a 6,000 pound behmouth with a 5 liter V8 and call it a green "hybrid" - Please, do they really think we are that gullible! (Humm - I guess they do. $15Bn worth of gullible by the last count. But I digress).

Rob - the point they wanted to make with the 'test' was that it's not what you drive, it's how you drive it......my Dodge pickup has the biggest engine ever put in one...a 5.9L behoemeth....15mpg is the best I could ever hope for...recently, I decided not to drive over 60mph & to coast where possible, turning the engine off instead of idling, etc. just to see what would happen....mileage has gone up to 19mpg!

Not what you drive, how you drive it!

Yep,fellas! it is how you drive it.
I remember years ago they used to do mileage driving competitions. Rumour has it an egg was placed beneath the accelerator. That meant you had to be really gentle on the throttle. Now f you dove one of these "behemoths" this way Tony, you might even squeeze 21mpg's out of it. :jester:

Stuart.
