Earl Scheib.jpg

Famous in the North East back in the 50s. PJ

If you look up Earl Scheib on Wikipedia, they have a picture of one of his shops on Central Ave in Albuquerque.

Best 50ft paint job for the price.

Earl did one for me back in the mid eighties, but I think by then a couple hundred. Though got my monies worth it was a 77 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. It was a lot of car.

There is still one open in Rancho Cordova, CA. I wonder what the price is today? My brother in law took his 356 Porche speedster in for an Earl job. They painted right over the bird crap on the car.

According to the Wikipedia page, Earl Sheib, as a corporation, no longer exisist, but when they wehn defunct, some shop managers, etc, were able to buy the equipment, etc., and were allowed to continue using the name - but as independently owned shops.

Knew someone once who got one of their "economy" jobs. They didn't bother to mask anything and when they painted the door jams apparently just opened the doors and shot paint in them, and the door panels, seats dash and steering wheel and so on.

In the Miami area, they had "Johnny and Mac's - by the railroad tracks". It was cheaper to paint a car than compound and wax it after the Florida sun had destroyed the paint. Maroon was the worst.

I was in the car painting business many years ago when Earl was very busy. Should I ever charged what Earl charged, if the interior was same color as car I would have just rolled down the windows and saved on masking time. I believe this is one of the times when the saying "you get what you pay for" applies very well. What they charged to paint a car I would not even used 1 piece of sandpaper or any masking tape.

Been told while spending days working to achieve self-satisfactory seams in a drywall project: "Doc! It's a WALL, not a FERRARI!!"

Only know one way to prep for top coat. On anything.
