Hooking the thing back up may in fact do nothing for performance. I'd advise consulting some more knowledgeable folks (i.e. the folks at advanced distributors?). It might even make more sense to have the advance rebuilt so as to give an earlier non-stock curve.

Our 72 is set exactly as it came from the factory with all pollution gear attached and working. It gets 30 mpg and runs great! Hap rebuilt the carbs and Jeff rebuilt and set up the distributor. I could not ask for this engine to run any better.

I have a 79 with twin SUs along with all the smog gear removed and the performance difference isn't even that noticeable from the drivers seat.
