TR4/4A distributor install

I'm most of the way through an engine rebuild on a TR4A. How important is distributor float? I have what I was using for years before the rebuild but while its all out I can fix it easier now rather than later.
 
Are you talking about end float in the distributor shaft, or the gear that drives it? Neither is terribly critical (as long as there is some), but if the gear moves, it will affect timing accuracy.
 
Agree with Randall! I had one come in years ago with a bad knock after a few miles on a rebuild. Took forever to pin point, no shims under the plate. Sounded just like a wrist pin in number 2.

I used a Harbor Freight dial gauge on mine, and used the test in the TR shop manual. As I recall, that was the float between the gear and the bush in the base of the pedestal. The test seemed crude to me, as I recall how it worked. What I remember is that with no shims at all, I was right within the range. It seemed as if in 50 years nothing must have worn much at all down there.
