Distributer problem/question

I have a '67 GT6 and have been having a bit of a problem with getting a new cap and rotor. The original rotor broke, the plastic just split, the car ran great before this problem. I ordered one from spitbits and picked one up at vicky brit (they are local to me) and in both cases they are the same, but wrong for my car. The distributer on my car has a vac advance and retard. The new cap will not even fit, there is a cut out on the engine side of the cap that does not exist on the new caps as well as a notch that is cut on the outside (wheel side) of the car. The car gets fire when just replacing the rotor, but acts like it is 180 out of time.

I planed on getting some pics of the car but the darn battery was dead in the camera....

Can anyone please put a little light on the issue I have here?

Thanks.

Once you post the pictures of what you have in there, I'm sure we'll be able to help you sort it out.

My GT6 is also a '67. I can confirm what Andy said, you should have a Delco dizzy. It also should not have a vacuum retard function. It sure sounds like someone swapped the dizzy in the past.

I got some pics of the distributer tonight.

I sure hope someone can help me out with this...thanks again

That is a Lucas distributor; as Andy says likely from a TR250 or early TR6. If you want to keep it, then buy tune-up parts for a TR6.

That one is actually one of mine, but as Andy & Randall have said, it is a Lucas and it's from a TR6.

Thanks for the help....I will get TR6 tuneup parts for it.

Is there an easy way to tell if this is a TR6 engine?....I can take some more pics if need be.

Right. The number would confirm what the block is. From the other photos, I'm assuming it is a "K-" GT6 engine, judging by the "narrow" head with the exposed pushrod tubes (something not seen on the TR250/6 engines). But with the right wrenches, anything is possible, especially 40+ years on....
