Disc Rotor-to-backing plate interference

Hi all -

I am FINALLY getting somewhere on the suspension of my '68. I'm reassembling the front. Much to my dismay, I seem to be getting interference between the inside face of the brake rotor and the backing plate on both sides. I don't recall getting this interference before I tore it down, and I am certain the backing plates didn't get bent or anything.

I tore the entire front suspension down. I am using new disc rotors, and the existing wheel hubs and bearings. This is for a non-wire-wheel car.

Any ideas?

do you have a picture?

Did you put on brake rotors for a wire-wheel car? (and you have a disk wheel car)

Bill - I suppose that could be the case. I ordered the brake rotors for the disc car, but maybe I was given the wrong set.

Is there anyway someone could take measurements for the proper "disc" rotor and I'll compare to what I have?

JP - I can get pics tomorrow - kind of difficult to see, just the backing plate is contacting the rotor in a few spots.

The backing plate is bendable too.

Could you have them reversed?

JP - I've tried bending them to clear, but it just seems wrong - they are hitting in too many places.

I suppose I could have them mounted incorrectly. I'll get some pics tonight to show you what I am working with. Hopefully it's something that easy. I don't see any other way they can fit on however.

Kevin-

I have an assembled unit on my bench right now.
PM me your private email and I'll take some pics for you.

Here is a photo showing a plate wheel brake disk next to a wire wheel disk. The plate disk is 2.34" tall and the wire disk is 1.60" tall.
Obviously they CAN'T interchange so ignore my first question.

Thanks Bill - no question about it, I have the plate wheel disc.

if you had them blasted they may have warped....

I think the probability of the backing plates getting bent in disassembly and storage is higher than anything else, however; you stated you're sure they didn't. I would be led to believe your new rotors were make to improper specs. Who'd you get them from?

Purchased from Little British Car Company back in 2008. These would be the generic Moss units.

I can understand a slight bending occuring in spots on the plates. The reason I don't think it's a bending issue is because some of the points of contact seem to be where the plate really can't be bent back anymore as the spindle is there.

I'll check out Paul's pics when he sends them and see if I have it assembled incorrectly. I am also going to try and get the calipers on there to see how they line up - maybe that'll help diagnose whether the rotor is in the right spot or not.

Wait a minute, can't you install the bearings in backwards and throw off hub alignment?

I didn't pull the bearings from the hub - unbolted hub from old rotor, bolted up to new.
