I just returned from a rally in Holland and experienced some brake squeal at times when weather hot and dry. This morning I fitted anti squeal inserts to both sides. No problem with that but I noticed that on both sides the outer pad was worn much more than the inner. Is this normal or does it point to a caliper problem. If normal should I now reverse the padsa to even out the wear? Car is a BJ8 1965

It is a caliper problem. Rebuild kits are available. The pistons can rust from water in the brake fluid. It happened to me. One of my inner pads wore out. As you can see, there is completely even wear on the three other pads. The corrosion inside the piston cylinder or the outside of the piston can restrict free movement and leave the piston dragging one pad. I can't explain the coincidence of both outer pads wearing the same, but take out the pistons and see what is going on. New pistons and seals are available. Originals are chrome plated, but the plating can wear off (mine did) and corrosion occurs especially with old brake fluid containing moisture. You have to be careful installing the pistons back into the cylinder with the new seals. It is easy to tear them if not careful.
