Disappearing shift knob graphics

My shift knob is a repro and the white paint used for the graphics is wearing off...flaking off to be more accurate. As you know, the graphic is actually debossed in the knob surface and the paint applied to the recess. They must use white-out or tempera, who knows but it's not very durable. Anyone out there come up with a good solution to this vexing problem?
 
Graphics? i must have an after market knob. Anyone know what the shifter knob looked like or what was offered in 61-62 ?
Mine has a wooden knob with a medallion with the shift pattern cast into it.?????? Bob /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
This is what came on them in 1956. Your's would likely be similar. See attached pic.

It's more likely that the grooves are filled with dirt than worn off. Just clean the grooves well & repaint with a good enamel. Should last for years.

Yes that's my knob, and no the grooves are not filled with dirt(funny). I guess I will scratch off the remaining paint with my finger nail and replace with enamel as you suggest. Thanks
 
Yes, scratch off the remaining paint carefully with a fingernail, toothpick, or awl. Apply off-white enamel with small brush with the aim to fill the recesses fully. Don't worry about straying outside the lines. Let it dry overnight and then use a rag with a small amount of thinner to wipe off the excess, going across the recess to avoid removing the paint in the groove. (good to test thinners before hand
on the bottom of the knob .. not sure what the repo knob is made of but mineral spirits should be o.k.).

I have used white nail polish for all knob graphics renewal.
Super clean the grooves and use the included nail polish brush to paint in white. Wipe excess off knob with rag. When dry go over with clear nail polish. Lasts forever.

Some nail polish is acetone base and may effect the finish. Regular Testor model paint should work and remove the excess with a clay bar.
