Disappearing Brake Fluid Problem Solved [Sadly]

I recently made a post about brake fluid disappearing. Well I have tracked it down and as you might expect the news is not good. The master cylinder is leaking its contents into the brake booster. The reason it hadn't been showing up in the exhaust is because the vacuum line to the booster was crimped together. So now begins the arduous task of pulling and replacing the brake booster and master cylinder. My local Auto Zone has both these items as rebuilts for approximately $150.00 with my units as cores. Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations concerning these items? As always input is appreciated.

This got 'lost' from the forum switch.

~If~ it were mine, I'd disassemble the M/C and hone it first to check for bore pitting... if it's good rebuild it. If not, get the 'reman', KEEP the core and have it stainless sleeved. You may not need to replace the booster if the diaphragm hasn't been soaking too long, just a cleanout/refurb.

My 79 had about a half cup of fluid in the booster. I took it apart and the diaphram was good. Be warned of the spring though!

Oops... I forgot to include the deadly spring disclaimer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks, I know about springs. Thats one thing you learn quickly with gun repair. Had A remington 1100 mag spring fly out in my face one day. Ouch!

I personally would have great hesitation using someone like AutoZone for a rebuild. I would strongly suggest you consider using the likes of Apples Hydraulics or similar. These types of rebuilders will do the job professionally. Remember what brakes are for and why windshields are larger than rear-view mirrors.

Lots of the LBC rebuilds are english. The parts place will tell you who did the rebuild and it will me indicated on the package. Stuff from parts houses usually has a warantee as well

Here's who I used for my MGC boosters and an MGB booster. They will be getting a second set of MGC boosters from me to do soon.

I've been very happy with their work. They did the MGC boosters about 1996.
