OK all you BJ7 owners, and possibly BJ8 as well.

Before I started the rebuild of the engine, 12 imperial pints filled up the engine to the full mark on the dip stick.

Sent the block off for a re-bore and fitted a Dennis Welch ali sump when it came back- nice.

Put 8 imperial pints of oil in and blow me down it came up to the mark on the dip stick, discussed it with Bill Rawles - AH specialist over here, and I asked if the sump could be a bit smaller in size than the old pressed metal one, he said that if anything the DW sump should hold more oil, and you can put in up to 14 - 18 pints as the racers do and I should just top it up to 12 pints and remark the stick. OK I can do that but I am interested in finding out what has happened.

The block was sent away with the dip stick tube still in place - could they have removed it and replaced it with an incorrect tube? I'll make that phone call.

How much tube should be protruding from the block? The dip stick is the same as it has always been in my possession.

Comments welcome please, and keep 'em clean lol

BN4 Longbridge tube is 112mm long and the top of the tube is just over 198mm from the lower block face where the oil pan bolts on when measured parallel to the dipstick tube. If that is of any help.

I wouldn't be surprised if the engine reco place bashed out the tube to do the machining work then cut the mauled end off and popped it back in. There is a certain shop nearby here that no longer gets any work from me for this very reason, among others. Andy.

Bob, The dipstick tube on my BJ7 is 4 & 1/2" long from where it is stuck into the block. I am just now getting ready to start this engine after a 4 year restoration and unbelievably i didn't write down how much oil I put in it because I have been changing oil in alot of cars lately. But I believe I have put only 5 US quarts into it at this time and remember the filter is still empty. At this time the level mark on the dipstick is just a smidgin shy of the full mark. Dave. (i am using an original oil pan).

Checked the tube - 4.5 inches, so that is OK.

Contacted Dennis Welch people, and they said that the dip stick would bottom out and should be cut down.

I was nearly convinced that the dip stick was bending against the pan bottom, but that is wrong to as it drops down nicely.

All crevices are now filled with oil - filter, rocker tube etc. so I just marked it again with a notch like Bill suggested. Still a puzzle though.

Bob
