Digital Camera Recall

FYI:

If you have a digital camera and the electronic viewfinder has gone blank or fuzzy, you may be eligible for free repairs due to a recall even if the camera is a few years old.
The affected brands are Canon, Fuji, Minolta and Sony. The viewfinder are actually built by SOny.

My Sony DSC-717, a digital camera that takes wonderful pictures, failed a few weeks ago and even though it's beyond warrantee, I called Sony. They explained the recall and even e-mailed me a USP prepaid shipping label. I send the camera out this week. This has happened to two of my friend's cameras as well.

Thanks for the heads-up. Looks like we're safe - the wife has a Dimage X60, and it's not on the list. And mine's an SLR, so we dodged the bullet.

I have a digital SLR but the wife has teh Canon Powershot - its on the list! HOwever, so far we've not had any problems.

Mine is an Olympus C-720 Ultra Zoom...looks like I'm safe!

I use a Olympus C-740 ultra zoom as my snap shot camera. It's been outstanding. Practically everything I have posted on here has been taken with that camera.

Thanks for the notice...I gotta find out what my wifes is now....It operates fine, but I think the USB connection inside the camera is messed up because it is no longer recognised by the computer(I've tried different computers, and different cables)

Just some input, here: We use Fuji 3100's, great little camera - like the optical zoom features - and I have an identical camera at my work place. After plugging in the USB cable to transfer files from my personal FUJI to my workplace computer, I noticed the files wouldn't transfer, either. Files transfer fine on the workplace FUJI, though. I'm guessing something in the registry is messin' with file transfer. Workaround: Switched out the loaded card from my personal camera to my workplace camera to transfer the files, and was successful. I suspect "daily (uninvoked) updates" may be a cause of the failure. Never had a problem with the USB ports until a couple of months back.
I'd appreciate any feedback on this!

humm..."daily uninvoked updates" huh? Well when ever I start my computer this "kodak update manager" thing start and I can't turn it off....so maybe thats my problem?

BTW: Our camera is a Cannon powershot. So I guess its on the recall list too....think it's 2, maybe 3 years old.

Well mrs. horsemits.

Had the same problem. Does the Doctor allow Windoze in the hovel or are we talking about linux boxen?

If'n it's windows we're talking about there is a registry hack to show hidden devices in the Device Manager. Turns out I had about 50 instances of the same camera and I guess it just stopped trying to make more or it hit some unknown limit. I was able to remove them all and then get it to pick up the camera again. I think it had something to do with just yanking the plug instead of properly dismounting the camera with the "safely remove devices" thingy.

here's the hack:

Open your registry and find or create the key below.

Create a new String value, or modify the existing value, called "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES" and set it according to the value data below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect. After the restart there should be a "show hidden devices" option in one of the pulldown menus.

Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Environment]
Value Name: DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: (1 = show all hidden devices)

But here's the bad news... it worked for me once and then came back about 3 months later and the same thing did not work... I futzed with it for a while and gave up. After an un-related complete re-install of the OS it started working again.

She's got an NT5 O/S here... I'll poke around inna registry for a key. THX for the info, Jim.

Concession to MS is due to the nature of the biz. "Outputters" to deal with and the "L" word sends 'em into apoplexy most times. They are comforted by terms like "PageMaker" and "PhotoPaint" for some fool reason.

o great, my camera is on the list. Milolta s414, it has been, and still is a nice camera. Most likely it will quit working tomorrow, now that i know it might have a problem. thanx for the info on the recall.

Why bother with the registry? Open the device manager, in the “view” menu, click “show hidden devices”.

depends on which flavor M$ you're dealing with I think. On XP Pro the view hidden devices was either not there or it didn't show me all these 'ghost' devices until I did the registry hack. As with anything related to computer stuff your mileage may vary...

Ok, I am about to start playin around with the camera again and I wanna open the device manager....Where is it?

Ok, Can I really be this clueless? I just spent about 20 minutes looking for anyting close to a device manager(I am using XP BTW)
I've ruled out the possibility of a fault within the camera as when I connect it to the PC it comes up with a "detecting new hardware" notice...But even if I use the basic new hardware installer that pops up with that I can get to the second step and then I get "data invalid".
Any ideas?

WOOT....But theres no mention of anything camera related there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif .....I can only stand about 10 minutes of computer "fixin" then I gotta do something else....Hence the reason it's taken me so long to sort this camera thing out.
