Differential question

I recently came in to possesion of a 3.9 differential to replace the 4.22 in my 76 Midget. As far as the wear pattern on the crown gear and pinion, I was very happy when I unpacked it. Upon further inspection, the differential gear on the crown side seems to float quite a bit. There isn't any play in the pinion bearing but there is a lot in the gear. The other side doesn't have near as much play but there is a little. I'm not sure if this is an issue or not. I would think the axle will support the gear but the movement concerns me. Any experience out there with a similar situation?
Thanks,
JC
