Differential nut removal & worn thurst washer

Mark Jones

I'm finally ready to start rebuilding the rear end of my Spitfire
(I've finished welding up the frame).

The differential is out of the car. Any suggestions how to stop the
pinon from turning while I undo the pinion nut?

How much play should there be in the thrust washers? I can't find
any information in my workshop manual on this or other tolerances.

Thanks so much all the help.

Re: Differential nut removal & worn thrust washer

Aloha Mark,

I can't help you with the thrust clearances. I imagine that you will need a Spitfire manual to get that info. Regarding removing the pinion nut, I am assuming you are referring to the nut that holds the drive shaft flange on the pinion shaft. I would suggest an impact wrench will do the job in about 2 minutes. I was once trying to remove the drive shaft flange from a TR3 gearbox. I probably spent 3 to 4 hours using a socket with a breaker bar and a three ft pipe extension, but could not break the nut loose. My neighbor who observed my dilemma, lent me his electric impact wrench and it immediately solved the problem. Good luck.

Safety Fast,
Dave
