Differential Interchangability

Hello,

One of the changes/improvements I would like to make to my TR250 is the addition of an overdrive.

I am researching sources at the moment and am looking on ebay and other sites.

Realising that Laycock-DeNormanville made OD's for several different car manufacturers, I was wondering what the degree of interchangability was (assuming there is some) between these units and how much effort would be involved in converting for use on a TR.

One OD that seems to be mentioned a lot on ebay listings is the Volvo, although it would seem to need modifications to the driveshaft due to the longer flange.

Does anyone have any suggestions for which OD's could be used in a TR without major modification?

Cheers,

Jim.

PS Of course, if someone has an OD that is using up valuable shelf space I would be happy to take it off their hands.

Lists different overdrives and the cars they were used on.

It seems to show both the Type "A" and "J" were used in that model, with the "J" also used in the Volvos.

They might be able to tell you what would work as a swap.

Jim,
I'm in the process of adding a Volvo overdrive to my stock TR6 transmission. Regardless of the source (Volvo vs Triumph) the amount of work is almost identical to convert the tranny. You still have to take it apart and replace the mainshaft as the original nonoverdrive mainshaft does not work with any overdrive. The only appreciable difference is you will have to change the Volvo's speedometer pinion gear so your speedo reads correct and the output flange which connects to your driveshaft. The only other issue is which overdrive you acquire, an A-type or J-type. The A will fit your frame without modification, the J will require an aftermarket or self-fabricated mount. Non of this is difficult and again, Volvo/Triumph its all the same.
