diff oil and noise

This afternoon I am checking and probably adding 90 wt oil to the diff in my 1970. I have a fair bit of whine at high speeds (>55MPH) I am thinking I am low in oil. Is there any additive that can be used to reduce the whine or is it a design feature....

Only on acceleration? Or is it constant?

when I hit 55 it starts to make noise, when I coast for a second or two at 60 plus it stops, then when I step back on gas it starts again. So I would say it occurs constantly when there is drive applied not just during acceleration acceleration

OK, I was just trying to be sure you were hearing the grears and not some other type of bearing noise. It sounds like gear whine that (until it becomes painful) is relatively harmless. I do not know of an additive to quiet it. You may be able to find a shop to reset the gear mesh tolerance and reduce the noise, but it is not generally cheap work.

well it is pretty loud. I think I am low on oil. I will know later today.

Should be checked frequently, especialy if you see leeks.

90 weight is the ticket, make sure the breather is free.

Hah, the Jedi has spoken, breather.

Faceing rear of car on upper right side just outboard of the differencal. Has a plastic dust cap on it, pull the cap and useing a wire or something check to make sure it is free. This keeps pressure from building up and forcing oil into the brake area. Also corrects overfilling but makes a mess.

thanks, Yoda, this trainee knows who has the Force.

i also have a whirrring noise, but only on acceleration...
i filled the rear end and it was kinda noisy, but after
i did 70 a couple times, it quieted down some.......
i got underneath and most of the oil has slung out
through the "seal" at the prop......its not too noisy now though.......
but as woodie is wondering....is it supposed to hum under acceleration or is that a sign of wear?........z

Hate to say this but you should never ever hear the rear end.

ill replace the seal and fill it up and see what happens...could be the prop too, i still have to
change the u joints.......z

Sometimes oil leaking out of the pinion seal means that the bearings are kinda sloppy. You should not be able to move the pinion up and down. If you feel some slop check the BIG nut holding the bearing pack together..it may have backed out. If not then new bearing might be in order.
Could be that ya just over-filled it too.

With the torque put on that nut, if it backed out there's more problems than just an oil leak! I'm guessing pinion bearing - if its in the rear end.

im not hearing it so much anymore....maybe it was driving around with the top up amplifying everything....ill fix it anyway soon.........z

Agree, that nut is on there almost for all time. Had a heck of a time getting it off to replace the seal.

give it a two-fer and do the u-joints and the pinion seal at the same time.

Youll need a large thinwall socket for the pinion nut and at least a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a cheater tube. So get that b4 u start unless you have a range of big sokkets....I think its 1 1/4"?

Soak the threads on the outside of the nut well. Mark the nut position in relation to the pinion end with a pin punch before you start and return the nut to that exact postion when your thru. Use RED loctite on very clean threads and stake the nut.

Noise tips......

Whirring whining noise at DRIVESHAFT speed and continually and increases noise with speed is pinion bearings.

""""" """" at AXLE speed """ "" is ring gear carrier bearings.

Fluttering whining on coast or thrust (acceleration) is ring and pinion wear. Usually one or the other. If really loud /objectionable remove the carier and if you can shave with the ring gear teeth outer edges then you know its R&P.

If you ran the diff empty you might have some of each.

Axle bearings are so lightly loaded in a pass car that they never usually go bad unless ran really dry. Usually a fluttering whine on decel.

thanks jerry, ill try to decypher all that later... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
how bout i just make an mp3 of my car with my minidisk and let u guys go wild with it...ill start a thread on it...

Zimmy I was thinking the exact thing this morning, listening to my car. Ha ha. Ill get mine you get yours and we can compare wines er whines
