Dieseling... et al

"What's that BUZZZING noise?"

Simon,

Thank you for elucidating me to a term with which I had a passing aquaintance..... :smirk:

To answer the query... ah, no I did not 'CC' my head... the dieseling is an infrequent occurance and did not, to me, warrant the additional expense associated with the process...

Great, first I had to google "CC'ing", now I have to Google "elucidating"

Simon,

Tony,

Thanks for the query...

The heat shield is in place and, with the exception of a small crack 3" long from the bottom up below the rear carb that causes a SLIGHT distortion, it is in good shape...
& that could be the problem!

Sorry, Ron, guess I should have explained the term.

My point was, if the head had been milled & the compression ratio had been increased it may cause this. Probably not, but something to check.

What's your idle speed? Too high would cause this, also.

What ambient temperature does it happen at?

Difference in rngine temperature when it does this?

Does it do it with a different brand of gas?

Does it ping under load?

Some things to think about.

Colin

Colin,

No worries about the term...

Ever since I posted this the run on has not occured again.. :confuse:

The head was planned along with the block...

My idle speed is 800rpm

Since the Temp Gauge is inoperative, I can not answer this.

Does it do it with a different brand of gas?
Does not seem to be a factor since I run Shell 91 Octane only.

It does not ping..

Thanks for the suggestions.. I will ponder.

Tony,

I will be removing the Carbs in the near future and will, either braze the crack or replace the shield.... It was in the queue anyway...

Thanks..

My 73 does the same thing since being rebuilt with the 8.7 pistons but its completely random and drives me nuts as it runs very very nice otherwise. I've run 91 in it since being rebuilt 1500 miles ago. Mixture appears to be right on going by the plugs. How is the anti run on system suposed to work? Mines installed and appears to work but it takes a couple seconds to 10 seconds after the iginition is switched off to work.

Try this. When the run on occurs, put the car in gear and let the clutch out (gently, not dumped). Had a Chevy P/U that sometimes did that. I would turn the key back on, put it in gear, and turn it off. Always worked for me.

Did you replace the tinfoil wrapped around the fuel line from firewall forward to keep heat in check? It was a factory option, if all the ones I've seen are correct. No-start when warm is a good indication of vapor lock. The fuel may be boiling when hot.

Did you also use the proper weight dashpot oil or substitute in the rebuilt carbs?

Now if you had said you had a cold start issue I would have said install a pointless ignition.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the comments.

This weekend I worked on the car a bit and, based upon your recommendations, performed the following:

1 - repaired the heat shield
2 - leaned the carbs out a tiny bit
3 - balanced the carb idle and airflow
4 - checked the valves (they were spot on)
5 - checked and adjusted the points (solid state distributor on the wish list)
6 - Adjusted timing
7 - checked dashpot level (using the oil specifically made for this purpose purchased from Moss)
8 - and a bunch of general maintenance schtuff.

I drove the car about 100 miles this weekend and find it to be running well, starting on the second attempt when hot... and finding no run on...

I will let you know if the gremlins re-appear.

Thanks again for your comments and suggestions...

Colin,

Thanks... fingers crossed....

Could'a been any one item on that list or a combination of them all.....stick with 93-octane for awhile.

Tony,

Thanks for the reply.

The best I can get in California is 91 Octane... After a couple of days of driving the car is still starting without a worry, running well, and the engine stops without run on...

You are right, somewhere in that list was the culprit.. or maybe a couple...

Be well.
