I know this is slightly off the wall but, if a virus carrying email gets past the blocker, how do you delete it without clicking on it? You have to highlight it to delete it. I never thought of this but the wife just asked me and I was lost for words.

Paul, as long as you don't have a preview pane running, highlighting and deleting it should be OK. If you are using a preview pane be sure to shut it off BEFORE highlighting. This is why i NEVER use a preview pane. I learned the hard way....

Mark - if the email shows in the preview pane, how can any attached virus attack the machine? Are there such critters where the email message itself can do damage?

My addled brain tells me a virus won't "attack" unless you double-click or otherwise "run" it. And if you save the attachment, you still have to run it (right?).

Another new trick for this old dog to learn?

in my case, and this was quite a while ago...as soon as i put the message in the preview pane, i think i just hovered over it...might have clicked it, it installed its payload, and i was screwed.

i imagine that the preview pane somehow opens the mail? since then i just watch what comes into my inbox, and delete as needed. Never open an attachment if you don't know or trust the source

I am no virus expert, but those that are, keep finding better ways to deliver them.

There was a time when someone found a way to imbed a virus in an image, but I don't believe that is still a threat. I also seem to remember that viewing the image in the preview pane will not infect the machine.

That is my understanding as well, Steve. Most of the threats in emails now days comes from people clicking on a link in an email from someone they don't know (and sometimes from someone they do know). The link then takes them to a web site that loads the malware on their system.
