Deer 0, Honda Fit 0

Well, it was bound to happen, and this morning it finally did. Hit a deer on the way into work while driving my Honda Fit. Wife and I are just fine, but the car has seen better days.

We see them daily around here, especially in the winter. All the vigilance in the world doesn't help when one pops up in your headlights in the road. We had just long enough to think "oh $&^#" and we hit it. Car did its job and absorbed the impact so we didn't have to.

Now it's just dealing with the mess of getting it sorted. Was about to sell this car since I bought the Land Cruiser, but now we'll see what we'll do.

Not the way I wanted to start the morning let me tell you.

Just be thankful you both are OK. I have a friend who had a similar run in with a "jane doe" on the NJ Turnpike. In his case the deer almost ended up in his lap. He is fine and many $ later his Toyota is back on the road.
Count your blessings that no-one got hurt.

5 more and you'll be even with my Bro in law

Glad to hear you are OK though - metal can be replaced!

There are places I hate riding a street bike for this exact reason (you probably agree).

Very true. We have a huge deer population around here (smaller by one today, though) and I'm extra super cautious on the bike -- though something like this morning there's not much you can do. Glad I was in the car.

So, lots of folks in these parts (especially bikers) tend to favour these wind-operated deer repellers.....little tube-shaped gizmos...and I don't have any idea if they work or not.
Almost like the way you can spot bear poop is the bells in said poop from eating hikers wearing bells.
I must say not one of the guys I know with bikes AND those deer repellers mounted has ever hit a deer....
I do remember a guy in a VW Bus who did, though....took the fire department hours to cut him out of it....and he wasn't pretty (or mobile) for months afterwards.
He brought his Rover 2000TC into the shop (actually, his wife drove him) to have those deer repellers mounted.

I had a pair but I installed them backwards

Actually had a friend hit a Moose this fall (Moose (Meece?) eyes don't reflect headlights) She was driving her Solara - needless to say it wrote it off but interestingly her airbags didn't deploy - they said the animal's legs were so narrow that they missed the sensors.

Airbags didn't go off in our car either -- main bulk hit above the bumper.

Car's off to a shop to have the insurance estimate done. Will be a couple days I'd imagine. Insurance company has been great to deal with so far, very responsive.

Just even the thought of hitting a deer will take 15 mph off my speed on a dark night. Car or Bike

Glad no one was hurt.

If that were here (in Louisiana) they would have taken the deer home and made sausage with it......

Stuart.

Def glad to see you and the mrs are OK.

Recently happend to my daugther. She's a new driver but a safe one. Driving on campus roads and nabbed one. Doing about 30. Impacted the bumper mainly. Amazingly the only damage to the car was the corner signal light cracked. Bumper did not even push in. It was the '90 Bimmer and I'm glad I got it for a beater for her.

Deer laid on side of road until public saftey got there. My Daughter was a wreck with emotion. They told her they would destroy the animal if it did not get up on its own. She went back the next day and there it was dead. Ya think they could have moved it? I wonder if they really did put it down.

Again, thankfully you guys are OK. That looks like one helluva'n impact.
