So the time is fast approaching when we are getting a new addition to the household. SWMBO is - how shall we say it - making ever more pointed comments about the lack of decoration in the room it's going to be inhabiting.

I thought painting the walls yellow would suffice, but sadly, that's been deemed insufficient so I need some tips on decorating.

We know the gender, and I'm thinking planes, trains and automobiles. I saw a G scale train and am seriously thinking about running one of those around the room at the top of the wall.

I was also looking at some of Cliff Cramps prints.

Other than that, I'm seeking ideas. Nothing too babyish...

Anyone had to do this recently?

this is the one and only shot you have at designing it...they quickly grow and will direct the future themes...my sons began yellow with ballons and blocks...they say make it very colorful...but it was short lived when it went to Ninja Turtles > Star Wars > Jurassic Park > then sports....have fun!

My boys rooms are cars, cars and more cars - and a small amount of superheroes laying around. 41/2 and 7 years old

After 6 kids (30yrs down to 4yrs) spread out over the years, I'd just paint the rooms in Kills Primer * have done with it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Yep, white primer because the artist with-in will appear shortly and the walls will have magic marker, crayon, pencil, pen, various paint types, and some unknown colorful food substance that can only be scraped off. Then there's the need for a commercial size five gallon pail of spackling compound for the holes cut to hide the action figures in, the hardball that got thrown by accident, the darts that were suppose to only be used in the basement on the dartboard, and the thumb tack holes from the various posters you asked him to only put up with tape. Now about that carpet color.....choose wisely!

which means Brown. That fancy changing table is going to be a dust collector in no time. When it is 4am and you are trying to do the equivalent of putting a squirming octopus into a small polyethylene bag... nothing works better than the floor.

And just wait until they are mobile...

and you wake up from the strangest dream about working in a stinky paper mill.... and you are thinking 'what is that sme....OH GOD!!!! when did you crawl into bed with us???'

Anybody read the comic strip Baby Blues? The couple in it have three kids, the middle one being a boy around seven I guess. Kid wants to repaint his room, so his Mum's asking him what colors he likes. The boy ends up matching paint samples to the various bruises he's collected (through being a rambunctious boy, of course). Mum thinks that's weird and kinda gross. Dad sez "Hey! I like that shade of purple!"

As for actual ideas? No idea. I'm rather an artsy type so I'd probably go all Jackson Pollock on one wall, Andy Warhol on another, Peter Max on a third, and paint a gigantic Sun Records logo on the fourth (I am nothing if not eclectic).

Congratulations! BTDT, felt the wrath of SWMBO. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/angel.gif

Yellow is a right biatch to work with. I painted my daughters room yellow (top) and lavender (bottom) with white chair/astrigal molding. We tried no less than THREE different shades before we found one that worked (read: one my wife liked). First shade looked light a hi-liter, next was way too green. Finally bought a couple quarts and just painted them on the wall until we found one that matched. I will never, ever, EVER paint yellow again, as long as I live. Or maybe as long as I'm married whichever comes first.

May I suggest a nice shade of blue instead /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I have been lucky in this trend. I have only had step children, and the youngest was 14. Miller Lite flags and posters on almost any color wall sufficed. Now he is 23 and his room is at Randolph AFB. When the granddaughter is her she stays the guest room done up in antique toys (including tin and cast iron race cars).

The only rooms I had much say in were my study, the family room, and my slot car room.

I've seen photos of the slot car room on your website. All I can say is wow. Just WOW.

My son is into Scalectrix cars, and has a 2-lane layout in the basement with about a dozen or so cars. But nothing like your setup.

When you come back to PA be sure to stop over and visit the track.

I will be in your neck of the woods tomorrow at Awkscht Fescht. Hope your business trip goes well.

Will do and thanks. I'll bring my little one and his eyes will likely pop out of his head.

I'm melting; it's hot as the dickens over here.

So as an update, we're going with two planes - a light and a large Sopwith Camel from the ceiling, a train - the G-scale round the top of the room, and automobiles - a couple of prints plus car bedding.

Best of all, swmbo has stopped complaining that it needs to be dealt with.

Cheap at any price...

A real plus.
