GT6 Deal or no Deal? Early GT6

Came across an early GT6 advertised locally for $2200(CDN)...Needs some work, hasn't been run in 2 years. Looks pretty solid in the pics. According to the owner one of the shock mounts in the rear is broken and the replacement needs to be welded in. What do you think? I know it needs work, but I understand earlier GT6's are getting hard to find, I don't know much about GT6's- so educate me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

It is probably a good thing my '67 did not have overdrive. I had it at 7,000rpm in 4th a few times and it handled so fantastic that if there would have been more I would have went for it. It just seemed to want to go fast and who was I to argue.

I have no idea what it is worth. How much fun do you want to have?
 
I'm not sure what they are worth either but you should try an e-bay search and compare prices. I've seen gt's go for as low as 500 and as high as 4000.00 for what I'm seeing in the pictures. Like I've always said before... How bad do you want it?
 
Well to answer that: Not very bad.....The last thing I need now is more cars problems, I am still trying to finish my "summer list" of car jobs before the weather gets to cold to do anything....BUT I vowed never to turn down a good deal on a cool old car because I know I'll regret it someday, no matter how little I may actually need it.
 
I love our GT6 but if you're looking at this car as an investment, they aren't there yet. Like any car, the basic new parts, bodywork, and paint will total up to a fair amount of money and that doesn't take into account your time.

The Canadian dollar seems to have regained some value against the $ US. $2200 CDN is now about $1950 US. Restored, that car may be worth somewhere between $4k-$6k US. SO... buy it to save it, buy it for a future project when you get caught up... or buy it and drive it like it is (w/ safety upgrades/repairs of course) until you're ready to sell it. I wouldn't buy it as an investment.

That said, I like our GT6 as a highway car. It will pull all day long and is much more comfortable on a long trip than the Mini. However, our car is lowered and it's not much fun in parking lots where you're making tight turns. The car always impressed me as quite a bit nose heavy.
 
Looks like an $800 car to me. Looks to need everything. A car like this will cost you $1000's to restore. IF you are an excellent mechanic,welder, painter, and IF you are not in a hurry for satisfaction, and IF you have a forgiving and understanding spouse-go for it. In the British car world spend more for quality. The most I have seen a GT6 go for on Ebay is 7-8,000 and you would not get to that quality of car without spending much more. I say NO DEAL
 
I was too passive in my post. Roofman cut right to the chase. To illuminate what he said... our GT6 was given to us. I spent 3 years and $6k fixing it up doing all the work myself. I'd be lucky to get $4k for it. The blue car above would be similar.

I started a thread at the beginning of the month about a guy I saw at a vintage race at VIR. He had trailored in a project 1968 GT6. He was asking $4k for the car in pieces. I smiled politely when he told me the price. A car like this is worth... what it's worth to you. This is however an easy way to loose money if you don't plan on keeping the car forever.
 
Similar to Doug's situation, I have a 1970 GT6+ parts car that was GIVEN to me. I'd spotted the ad 5-6 years ago for it, and I tipped off a friend who was looking for one. He paid $100 then. When he no longer needed it, he gave it to me.

Thing is, other than a removed and disassembled gearbox, it's all there. Quite a few little dents, and a lot of rot in the boot floor area in particular. Overall, it looks about the same as the one pictured at the top of this thread.

Bottom line: I don't think it's worth $2200 CDN. The shock mounts are more likely to rot than "break"; I'll bet that it needs a good bit of welding there...and in other places.

A sad fact of life is that the GT6, arguably one of the nicest packages Triumph ever put together, never had a huge following and still doesn't to this day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
 
Well I had no intention of actually paying 2200...I tend to look at asking prices as a "suggested values". I'll probably end up low-ballin an we'll see what happens, as always thanks for the advice.

Offer $1000 and wait and see. GT6s are great cars, but they made more than one or two.

Ron, I paid $100 for my '67, have about 19K into it, and it may be worth $8500. When I finish it. And, I did <u>everything</u> myself with the exception of installing the headliner!
