Well, the Prince of Darkness has struck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif My Lucas ACR25 alternator is putting out ZERO amps. Because of the holiday, I have a couple days to think of my options. I can probably get one locally, like I did 2 years ago. But I could also do the Delco conversion, if I knew how. If anyone has specific instructions on this conversion on a TR7, please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

PS....Bad timing. The big British Field day is next week. Has to be fixed in time for that!

I don’t think the Lucas is any less reliable than the Delco. My TR6 Lucas alternator faired much better than the Delco that came on my Suburban. The burb ate 3 of them in a little over 100K miles and I understand Buicks and some other larger GM's had the problem. The TR6 never failed for 82K until I personally screwed it up. I got a replacement from NOPI 1 for 60 or 70 bucks 6 or 8 years ago. The replacement was a Bosch. What a surprise! However, it works fine. If I had time I would have taken the Lucas to an alternator shop for a rebuild but time did not allow. If you are looking for reliability, go with the Lucas it came with. If you need more power, check with the local rebuilder and see if it can be done with your orig Lucas.

Haven't been on in a while so you may have posted as to how you came out on the alt. fix. I finally got the red light to go out on my 7 by replacing the alternator with another used Lucas which seems to be fine except for the whine which seems to be greater on this unit than on the old one. It sounds like a turbo whine, wish it was. Now if I could just get all the sticky stuff from the electrical tape I had over the alt. light, off the meter face. It had been on there nearly a year so I suppose I should expect a little residue.

Took my old alternator to the shop, and all it needed was bearings and a rectifier. So I opted to repair it rather than do the conversion. I've got all the info, and will keep it for future reference.
