Datsun 5 speed woes....................help

Hello BCF I wondered over here from MG experience to look for even MORE help. I dropped in a datsun 5 speed via rivergate and I have been driving out bugs. I have one bummer I cant face!! I have a 4th gear wine at 60mph. When I continue to 5th at 70 it leaves. I know what it IS NOT.
It is not the rear (I changed it) It's not the rear wheel bearings (I changed Them) ITs not the motor cuz its a fresh rebuild. My thought tat I dont want to admit is its a 4th gear bearing in the tranny. WHO ELSE HAS IT ANYBODY??
Who rebuilds datsun trannys in PA?

Thanks for the help and Merry Christmas
Toby in PA

I know that in some trannies, even when the sychros are not locked in , say, first and second, the shaft is still turning. If there are needle rollers in these gears, there can be flat spots from being engaged that the bearings run on and they can whine. Not as noticeable when these gears are engaged. Just because the Dastun trannies might be an upgrade from the stock ones, they are still 30 years old or so.

The 60 F series Datsun 210 transmission has three main shaft ball bearings, one at the front, one in the middle and one at the tail shaft. The cluster gear has two ball bearings, one in the front and one in the rear. There are four cage needle roller bearings. If you suspect a bearing failure the only way you will know is disassembles it. If you need bearings, brass and seal kit let me know.

Interesting getting a whine in 4th gear only. Being direct drive, it's only in that gear where there are only very light forces on the bearings.

I agree with Donn. I am running one that is only quiet in 4'th which makes sense since it is straight coupled to the engine in 4'th.

Hello racingenglishcars and others. I did some more testing and found it to be a wine at 60 MPH. Wheather it is in 4th or 5th. So it is not only in 4th gear. I dont think its RPM related but rather MPH related. I did not run 3rd gear up to 60 to check it . Only 4 and 5 were run at 60 MPH. would this narrow it to the bearing on the ourput shaft?

You say you changed the rear, changed it for what? Another used unit or one that was rebuilt or set up by an expert? The rear axles are not eternal, many are just flat worn out now. I have a Datsun in my Westfield and when I got around to doing something about the noisy axle we found three broken gear teeth. The howl was really noticeable in 4th.

Let me suggest what I did.

Pack a lot of sound deading material around the gear shift lever! Either that or a tear down and even that may not get rid of all the noise. I replaced all the rough bearings in a transmission once to stop the noise and all I accomplished was to quiet it about half. The other half I attributed to wear in the gear teeth from being run loose.

nomad we think alike I was going to stuff my wifes cat down in the tunnel around the tail of the tranny. Are cats good for sound deadening??

What a good midget stuffing material?? She'll miss that darn cat. Then I'll get blamed

Thanks Nomad

Toby

You can always claim little Fluffy must have climbed in there on her own. I had a friend in highschool whose cat rode to school under the hood of her car.

"Well honey, the tranny IS quieter now... why don't we just leave her in there as long as she doesn't start to smell..."

FYI, I love cats(they taste like chicken)

Talk to Bill, he can help you out.

Yeah, BillM is the Dat-soon transmission guy.
That said, even a ground short (Sub Term) also called a "sound short", ANYTHING touching the driveline, like the tunnel cover, even at the shifter hole...or a screw holding the boot down touching the top of the shifter will give you noise transmitted.....and the noise may be nothing discernible without said short.
Look closely at any body bits (floorpan, tunnel cover) touching the trans.
Dave

I have been monitoring this thread but didn't comment.
The only way to truly determine what is making the noise is to open it up and see which bearing (or gear) is bad.
As Dave said the bigger problem is that something is transmitting the sound to the car. If the trans mount has something wrong (or maybe the exhaust brace goes to the body and not to the engine/trans) then that could easily be the problem.

Bill I too went looking for "transmitters" I undid the mount from the exhaust pipe to the tranny. I have as yet to place the side tunnel bolts into the datsun rear mount. So the rear of the trans is bolted only from the bottom up through the mount. This however all rides on rubber. I agree the final say comes from a peek inside. I guess I just want to narrow it way down before I yank it out. I would like to eliminate ALL possibilities while it still resides in the car. I would hate to pull it,, rebuild it, replace it and still have a wine. In that case I will need WINE..by the case

THanks guys for offering advice

If nothing more these are the easiest to work on transmissions that I have ever seen. They don't need any gaskets and only 2 seals need to be replaced (front and rear). If you follow the manual you will have no problem.
When you pull out the bearings and wash away all of the oil (wash in gasoline or kerosene)and spin them you will very quickly determine which one is bad (purely by the sound they make when they spin).

When talking about side tunnel bolts I assume you are talking about the mount for a rivergate swap. Those 2 peices of strap could easily be vibrating against your tunnel and causing the noise. I'd secure them before pulling the trans.
