Dashboard removal-restoration

Hi all,
I'm looking at refinishing the dash on our 65 BJ8 and I wanted to know if there were any pitfalls in disconnecting and removing the oil pressure/water temp gauge. Also, any other tips in this endeaver would be appreciated. I am mostly working of the Facia Restoration article on the British Columbia Club site.
Thanks,
Drew

Hi Drew,
Welcome to the forum. The oil line just disconnects at the gauge. There is a tiny fiber washer that will probably fall out between the gauge and the flared pipe. Lay a rag down to catch it and any oil. The Water temp sensor is a little trickier. You may want to
drain a little water out of the engine block before ( or not). Someone made a special tool to remove the sensor HERE , but as I write this, the weblink isn’t working. Basically, they took a 5/8” sparkplug socket and cut a slot lengthwise so it could fit over the capillary tube and onto the sensor nut. Then use an open-end wrench on the hex part of the sparkplug socket. It think they even put a hose clamp around the socket to keep it from spreading if a lot of force was needed to remove the nut. Be careful with the capillary tube. If you break it, the tube and gauge have to go to be refurbished. Once the nut is off, the tube and sensor get fed through the firewall and then through the dash.

OH Greg, You forgot to tell him about tying a string on to the Primary choke cable when it is with drawn, so he can refit it properly after the dash be put back.---Keoke- :grin

Well Keoke, I had to leave something for you. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif Actually, I didn't think of it 'cause I don't have the chokes set up on the Mikunis.

Can you post the British Columbia webb site. I am also in the middle of making a new dash for my BJ8. Thanks and have a good day!

John
