Dash Pad-less

I have been considering recovering the dash pad on our BN7 for a few weeks now and would like to finish the dash while I am waiting for the gauges to get back from the rebuilders. Since the pad and the windshield were not in place when I painted it the dash area looks just as good as the rest of the car. Is there a piece of cockpit mold available maybe off an older car that didn't have the padded dash that would fit the BN7? Did the BN6 have the pad?
I think it would look really nice to nix the pad. I noticed the picture of the 100s that was recently posted also had no dash pad. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks Bob

There just happens to be a 100-4 front cockpit moulding on Ebay right now. I have seen other cars with that modification and it looks good.

I tried to do the 100 trim on my 100/6, and it just doesn't work.

The piece is too long, so that's better than too short, as it allows for trimming the ends, but the real problem is the contour; the 100's have a taller shroud (longer stroke/taller engine to cover) and the trim isn't "flat" enough.

I had every intention of leaving the pad off, and have the scuttle suitably painted to match my bare fascia, so I was a bit dissapointed that I couldn't reshape the 100's trim satisfactorily.

open up this link to get a good view of the engine-turned dash: https://www.rfdm.com/gallery/album107/IMG_5455?full=1

Randy,

You may have just had the bad luck to get one that doesn't fit your car. I have been running a 100 cockpit front trim on my 100-6 for 20 years and it fit fine. Since these were all stamped with car numbers after fitting in the factory, you may have simply gotten one that was a bit unique and didn't match up with your car.

I also don't think there is really any difference in the shroud height or curvature because I also run a 100 windshield and it fits the curve of the shroud perfectly.

Not meaning to be contrary, just my experience

Hrmmhp! I only tried the one, and when I couldn't get it to fit, I abandoned the plan.

Anybody have an extra 100 cowl trim...?

Thanks everyone for the information. I would like to at least give it a try and see if I can get one to fit. From experience I can tell you that very few things that are suposed to fit on my car actually did without some kind of tweaking or bending. Great pictures Randy. You must have more toys than most of us, some pretty cool stuff there. Randy I must say that I thought you could probably fab yourself a front cockpit molding on the mill after seeing some of your handy work. Thanks again for the information at keep me posted on any future progress.

Hi Bob,

My car is a BN4 and was padded, I think all 6 cyl cars were, so you need one from a 100.

I think one from any 100 will fit. I don't know if the one I have came from a BN1 or BN2, but I don't think there is a difference.

If there is a difference, hopefully someone will speak up.

Good luck,
Dave

Thanks Dave,

I actualy misread Steves post to say BN4 but I see he did reference the 100-4. Now to find one. I am not set up for paypal on e-bay but I guess I will give that a try.

That piece had a reserve of $50.00. I just satisfied it.

It's all Dave's fault...

If I win the auction, I'll let y'all know how the fit turns out. It might even be possible to use that "correct" piece to get the one I already have to the right shape...

Randy,
Keep me posted on how this progresses. I do want to do this modification ( or down grade depending on how you look at it I guess) Anyway I think it looks really clean and keeps the lines flowing nice and uninterupted.

Duane,

Wow, he sure has alot of parts. I know shipping into Canada is expensive. Is it just as high coming into USA from Canada.
I would like to have an original piece over the repro stuff.
I am located in North Carolina.

Thanks Bob

Let me know and if it's doable I may be intrested in buying one or the other.

Hey, BlueRidge, when I did my 100/6 over last year I used a 100/4 front cockpit trim on it and it fit perfectly. Instead of using a dash pad I covered the top of the dash with the same vinyl that I used on the facia panel and it looked "factory" correct. No glare that you might get with the painted dash top. Bob,

How did the rest of the interior turn out? It was I that send you the door patterns.
Any leads on 100 trim piece?

Bob

Oh yeah, I recognized your signature as the donor of the door pattern I used. The interior I put in the car came out surprising good. One mistake: used hardboard for the door panels, should have used thin plywood. darn vinyl wouldn't glue well to the hardboard, (to dense?). The facia was excellent. Even the rear quarter trim which I faked (no patterns) could have fooled a non-Healey person. Front kick panels just as good as factory. Total interior trim cost around $40. Home Depot indoor/outdoor carpet more than adequate if one is CAREFUL cutting and glueing. Another $20! Alas, I couldn't get the OD to work so lost my patience and sent it down the road to a new home. The 100/4 front cowl trim came with the car from the PO , by way of ebay. Bob
