Dakar Rally is on right now.
It goes on for the next 15 days.
There is a team of (new) MINIs running it and a good number of British drivers and riders.

I have to say the trucks are about all that interests me - the others are like F1 - so purpose built that they really aren't relevant to actual cars any longer.

There are two different worlds in the Dakar rally: the professionals backed by factory (or big time) money, and the amateurs who often spend their own money or must raise sponsors.

I follow a couple of guys on a motorcycle website each year. They are not professionals and spend gobs of money to prepare their bikes and take everything to the race. Even for a motorcycle, it costs tens of thousands of dollars just to show up.

The preparation is grueling, with athletic conditioning for many months to gain strength and endurance for the race. Only the strongest (and best funded) will finish the race.

Quite amazing, especially for the amateurs. A real thrill to follow them. I can't imagine riding a motorcycle at full throttle the entire way through those god-forsaken places. It takes more guts than Dick Tracey, I think.
