As good a guy as my dad was, he didn't help my popularity as a kid. He was city attorney for the small town I grew up so wrote up charges for drinking and other mostly minor offenses on parents of kids I knew. School board member and later part time county prosecutor didn't help either. But would have him back in a second if I could.

Mike, I can relate. Mine was school board president, small town place. Knew most of the folks in town. He always said: "Don't do anything outside the yard you wouldn't do at home. Somebody out there will know you and I'll find out about it." He later said: "I could choose to be your friend or I could be your father. I chose the latter."

Dinner in my teen years was the "Family Meeting" time: "What were you doing in town today instead of being in class?" **BUSTED!**

And I miss him and his counsel more than I can say.

All any of us can do is try to be the person that they would be proud of. When folks ask why I'm kind, don't get short with people and try to tech those in my profession things I've learned they haven't yet, I create both my parents for setting the example I try to live up to.
