D-washers on lower front wings

Looking at the parts book, I see the front wings are supposed to be attached to the chassis at the bottom with three sets of nuts and bolts, using D shaped washers. Are the D washers supposed to go between the head of the bolt and the outer face of the flange, so that they can be seen, or are they supposed to go on the inside face under the nut and other washers where they can't be seen? I can't tell from reading the parts book. Looking through Clausagger's book, I can't see any D washers in the few photos he has of the area.
 
I *think* they would do the most good between the bolthead and the fender; that piece of sheetmetal being thinner, and more likely to be torn, than the inner sill flange.

But if you lose concours points, I will deny everything...
 
I don't think they go between the bolthead and the fender side of the flange. When positioned in this location, the round side of the D-washer hangs down below the line of the fender to chassis flange. Again, if any of you know the right answer, please share.
 
The Austin-Healey 100, 100-6, 3000 Restoration Guide by Gary G. Anderson, Roger Moment says the 'D' washers were only occasionally found and then with the flat of the 'D' aligned with the lower edge of the flange.

Thanks Ian. I didn't see that. There is no way to fit the washers I got from Moss in that configuration, so I may leave them out.
 
Bill, before giving up, make a trip down to your favorite (i.,e., most comprehensive) nut & bolt store and pick up some 1/4" SAE washers.

The SAE washers (SAE bolts are fine thread) are of a smaller O.D. than the NC variety (most common) and the I.D. is generally a closer fit as well.

It's quite probable that Moss (and others) are supplying a modified (the "D" cut) NC washer.

Well, here are the fun facts on this issue:

1. The Austin Healey Body Parts book shows the D-washer.

2. The Parts book does not show which side of the flange the D-washer should go on.

3. The space between the top of the bolt hole and the return bend of the fender is too small for the round side of the D-washer. By a lot! You need to turn the flat dise up to get it to fit. then the round side sticks down below the flange line.

4. Moment/Anderson confirm that they install on the fender side of the flange, but claim they were rarely used.

5. Any washer that fits under the return on the fender side would not need to have the flat side, as it would already be small enough to fit within the lower edge of the flange.


I'm not sure what is needed in this location, but I think the idea of simple 1/4 SAE washers makes a lot of sense.
