D-Day in Poway - Smog Test!

Expecting the worst, because I’ve always had bad luck when taking my B in for emissions tests, usually failing the first go-round. Anyway I gritted my teeth and took my B down to the local State regulated “Smog Test Only” facility as mandated by the DMV because MGB (or at least mine is) are considered “High Emitter Profile” vehicle. I figured it wouldn’t pass because I couldn’t get my settings exactly where the manual said they should be.

All I can say is that I did all that I could do at this point – as I was well into the frustrating “grasping as straws” stage of trying to get the old gal in her sweet spot prior to the test. Throwing in the towel I decided to take her in and run the test to see what her numbers where, then I could take it down to a local MG specialist recommended by other members of the San Diego MG Club.

There I was waiting outside watching this stranger fiddling around with my car feeling helpless as her future was out of my hands. Twenty minutes later the tech backed the car out of the garage and parked her. I walked over to the car and the guy simply said “I’ll meet you at the counter with your paperwork”.

Walking up the counter he started filling out the paperwork and then handed me a copy to sing. Holding my breath I looked at the paperwork – Lord have mercy – She passed! Not with flying colors mind you - but at this point who cares. She passed.

Going over the emissions test results the worst part was the CO% @ 15MPH test where it measured 1.36%. The max allowable CO% is 1.43% Truth be told - I wonder if the tech didn’t make a mistake as the reading was 0.43 at 25MPH. Everything else – HC (PPM), NO (PPM) was way below the average emissions for passing vehicles.

Here is a copy of the test results for those of you who can understand & interpret it.

I find it kind of funny that the tech didn’t see my catalytic converter and marked it “NOT APPL”. Go figure.

Final thoughts: At the risk of sounding too cocky – I guess I should be a bit more positive about my abilities under the bonnet in the future.

OK Luckey, Now go read the Sprigets Forum like I suggested---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Speaking of Luckey, Tom Luckey is there in Powway and might give you a hand in the future he is not in the repair business but is very very Knowlegeable on LBCs. Putzke is also local. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

erm... wow... those are some low numbers.... you sure your car is using gasoline? maybe the "technician" stuck the sniffer in the airfilter on your car? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Come to think of it, my numbers at 25MPH were lower than the numbers I turned out at 15MPH... but mine weren't even close to what your car exhaled

Hi Bret want to tune mine Regards John

Sure, I’ll tune your car – but ya gott'a pay my the airfare Down Under. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

All & all, it was a royal pain. Not looking forward to doing it again in two years, but I must say the old gal seems to be running great. Sure hope Moss Motors comes though with that smog legal EFI kit this spring to make the trip to the Smog Station a little less stressful.

Cheers,
Bret

How about attaching a secret propane bottle somewhere inconspicuous then running the car on it after they hook up the sniffer? In Pa. we are permitted to drive cars that belch plumes of miasmic gas and fortunately don't have to endure such inconveniences.

I don't know what you're referring to ... in my county (and yours too, I'd expect!) we have to pass pretty stringent regulations. My brother's MGB would never pass, except that we make sure it doesn't exceed 5000 miles per year (it had to pass when we bought it, though). My midget is NA because it's non-cat and because it's an antique ... otherwise, I suspect I'd never pass.

hey bret... I'm just curious here, what do you set your CO readings to when you tune your car for emissions and at what RPM? I'm trying to tune my car for emissions, but I'm having a bit of a time figuring out what I should tune to... the Haynes manual says 5.5% at idle, but the CA test has max allowables 1.41% at 15MPH and 1.21% at 25MPH. If you could shed any light on the situation I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

never mind... I got it

Man oh man! I'll take the snow any day. I thought Upstate N.Y. emissions inspections were getting stupid. We only do a visual inspection of anything older than 96. and 23 model years old and older is safety only. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It's only a matter of time
