Sorry but its me Again. Can any one tell me the correct tension for a MGB 72 model with a copper gasket. I have tensioned it down to 60 f/lbs and have a slight weep around the joint. The head was machined befor fitting. Regards John.

I just replaced the head gasket on my 74.5 this weekend using a composite gasket.

The repair manual indicates a torque of 50-55 ft-lbs.

Although it doesn't differentiate between gasket types, it does indicate that the block should be checked well around each stud. The manual suggests that a common reason the head gaskets leak is because the block is raised around the studs.

Don't know if it will help, but something to think about.

If using a copper gasket i usually spray them with a few coats of aluminium paint. It melts and provides a great seal and prevents weaping ....hope this helps.
 
Thanks Guys. I talked to MG shop they told me to redo tension on head bolts but what do think I broke one of the long studs. So the head is coming off again to replace stud. They also told me that you can buy a gasket sealer for copper gasket at local auto shop. So I will have a look and will keep you informed of the out come. Once again thank you for response. Try using Coppercoat gasket sealer. It's made by Permatex/Loctite, and works like a charm.
Have you thought about using ARP head studs?

Hi. Can any one give me more info on the ARP studs that Bugeye was talking about. I was replacing the head again and another stud broke between 40&50 FT/Lbs. These are new studs I got at MG Workshop and this is the second to break. Any help I would be greatful. Regards John. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
