With the help of a good friend – we got the head off the car and at last over many months and advice from BCFer’s – an answer. I probably have a warped head (& possibly the bottom half as well ??). Head gasket looked fine (it was actually copper). Without taking it somewhere – I say it probably warped because one side of the gasket had oil on it (carb side) and the other did not (spark plug side).
Just for fun I have posted additional pictures if anyone is interested. They are at:

The condition of the cylinder walls on # 3 & # 2 were awful. Rusty and there was a “puddle” of water inside of each of them (less than a teaspoon, but alarming since there should be zero).
I did find that 5 of 13 (or so) water jackets were visibly “mucked up”. I imagine the others probably have some degree of sludge in the bottom. I put a thin screw driver down the shaft of the worse one (off of # 3) and could feel the “muck” inside. Any advice on cleaning this out without pulling the entire engine for a “hot tank” (and rebuild) ??
Some idea’s that were provided have been to remove the lower radiator hose: 1) Blow compressed air through the jackets forcing “muck” out. 2) Use (lightly) a “dremmel” to grind out the stubborn items (but this only works for the first 2 inches or so). 3) Use a “fine” funnel and pour water through the jackets to flush out the “muck” (small and large pieces) out of there and all pieces that shouldn’t be there come out of the lower hose port.
If it doesn’t work – it still will continue to break down on me (as it does now) and will be in for a rebuild this winter. I feel I don’t have too much to lose in this situation.
Thanks to all who encouraged me on what a reasonable job it was. Now that it’s off – it wasn’t too bad and much quicker than I thought. Any advice on this on how you would approach this problem would be appreciated.
