cyclic tugging to the right...

Hi all,

I'm having a recently developed problem with the front end of my '76. I have my suspisions as to what may be causing it, but would like some feed back on what you all may think. When driving my 'B there is a cyclic/metronomic tug to the right in the steering wheel. It seems to be stronger at lower speeds (under 30MPH). I don't hear any sounds associated with it, but I've already ordered front wheel bearing kits... just in case. The only times I've ever experienced anything similar to this in other cars was when the brake rotors were warped, but in those situations the cyclic tug only happened when braking. In my situation, the tug seems to go away when I apply the brakes.

The front pads, and soft lines on the front brakes are new. I have a new bushing kit I'm planning on installing this weekend. While I'm under the car, is there anything I should look out for specifically to try and solve this issue?

how is the air pressure? are the shoes dragging one one side?

Sounds like shoe a draging or could be the rotor. Did you replace the rotors when you replaced the shoes and lines? I've not had a car tug or pull due to a bad bearing, they just sound HORRIBLE when they go out. Actually I drove a Honda CIVIC wagon with a bad bearing for over a year. No tugging or pulling, but I got tired of the terrible noise.

no, i didn't replace the rotor... just had it resurfaced. I've had bearings go out before too; I have to agree they sound horrible when they do. I ordered the bearing kits as a precaution... I'm beginning to think that maybe one or more of the tires are badly out of round or something along those lines, because the car wobbles at low speeds (in sync with the tug)... make sense?

If the rotor got hot then hit a water puddle it could be warped too. Here is an easy way to see if the rotor or hub is out:

The dial indicator came from Harbor freight. I forget how much but was quite cheap and works just fine for this type of thing.

Much the same thing happens when a tire tread starts to separate from the casing. It's a little hard to detect. I had a tire shop guy run along side the car as I drove at low speed. He picked up on it immediately. An on the car wheel balancer/spinner will usually pick it up also. It's not unheard of for two tires to do this at the same time.

that may be. I gave my tires a brief look before leaving work tonight, and they're running very low on tread. I was hoping i could get new wheels before having to replace the tires... ah well...
