CVT vs 6 speed manual

Some of the new cars I'm looking at to replace my 2000 Mazda have CVT (continuously variable) transmissions. Most have good reviews, and most CVT can be shifted manually.

I've had manual trans since I left the cradle and would prefer it.

But ... the alternative to CVT is usually a six speed manual shift.

Anyone here have a six speed manual for street/highway driving?

I'd prefer to stay with manual, but the thought of punching the clutch pedal six times and shifting six times after every stop sign isn't appealing.

Thoughts?

With many six speeds, 5th and 6th are both overdrives. 4th is still usually 1:1 so 1st through 4th is pretty much what your used to. The only time you are likely to actually use 6th gear is on the interstate at 75mph. Unless the engine has enough torque to pull a very tall gear at low rpm.

I love standard but will likely go automatic for the next car - just don't like shifting gears continually in city traffic
