Broke the intake manifold for my '63 Midget....don't know how I did it...set it in place over the studs & loosely put on the 2 end washers & nuts - loosely meaning hand tight.....then, as I was putting on one of the interior washers & nuts, I noticed the crack.....took manifold off & it fell apart in my hands!

All I can figure is that it must've been dropped during shipment & cracked...but I never saw anything that pointed me to believe that!

As you can see, this is one of the early 1098 manifolds, pre-PVC! Gonna be hard to find another!

Tony, I just parted with a bunch of 1098 stuff, but I'll check my parts bins and see what I've got for manifolds. With a little luck I'll have one.

Sand blast and paint the heat sheld the same color as the engine while you have the opertunity.

Trevor - I hoper they are!! I'm gonna look through my spares also but as I remember, this was the only one I had without all the vacuum hookups....

This was the one Hap did such a nice job of blasting & painting for me!

That's a photo of an AH Sprite....see the 'AUSTIN' on the valve cover plate.

But, it is a curious situation....I wonder?

Tony, I checked last night and it looks like all my 1098 manifolds went with the car to Canada. All I've got left are the ones with the extra holes.

Now, I've gotta find the adapter that goes on the top of the spin-on oil filter housing to which the oil cooler hose fits!
 
Ray, don't drop it, that's how Tony got into this predicament in the first place! LOL
 
I have no idea how it happened...I took it off the car, packed it up & shipped to Hap - dirty....Hap did an absolutely wonderful job on it & returned it to me.....I took it out of the box & sat it on a table until time to install...there was no outward sign of a crack in the paint, nothing...then, after I installed the front & rear nuts hand tight (hand tightened the rear one first - that's where it broke)...the darned thing cracked.....I'm just guessing that UPS dropped it somewhere along the way but the crack never fully evolved until I started installation....it actually didn't crack completely in half until I was removing it!

Things like that just sometimes happen - its just pot metal after all!
 
You guys keep saying paint. What paint, that's alum, by the way.

I have never seen one crack. Aluminum definately polished.
 
Have it repaired, Tony. Keep it in reserve. Ya gotta have someone you know who's good enuff with a welder to knit it back together.

Yes, it is aluminum, and that's the conumdrum!

We all know what happens to aluminum when it's polished, the abbrasive action of any compound will soften the detail (casting lines, grain, edges, etc). An option is to clean it by blasting, but which media? Silica (health issues), glass, aluminum oxide will all get it clean but also leave a matte surface due to the micro pits. Walnut shells is probably a better idea.

OK so using whatever method, you get it clean. How long's that going to last? It's aluminum! Going to oxidize...in Jack's climate (humid, salt air) you can see it quickly. So...you coat it...with what. A permanent coating that is low maintenance and heat tolerant is the best. Spray on or brushed clear coat...yes, that will work...but, you wind up with a part that looks...clear coated.

So, a lot of folks resort to aluminum paint. It _approximates_ the virgin aluminum finish and has the benefits of the clear coat.

That said, the intake on my '73 Midget is natural.

It's a catch 22.
