General Tech Cured My Ebay Addiction

Well, after 4 years of checking Ebay multiple times a day, every day, looking for parts to get the TR2 back on the road...I am finally done with Ebay. I ordered the interior kit from Skinner...and that is the last of my parts shopping for the foreseeable future. Sure, there are a few odds and ends to go, but nothing I can wait to turn up any more.

I declare my Ebay addiction cured!

At least for this project...

You will like the skinner kit. I have their black leather one in my 60.

Cheers
Tush

Thanks Tush...It's the biggest single ticket item for the restoration, so naturally a bit apprehensive. Glad to hear Jonathon make a good product!

I shopped ebay daily for about 3 years for my TR3. I remember setting my phone alarm to check on auctions, and last minute bids. I remember timing my breaks, lunches, dinners and work time around the ending of an auction. I also remember that 'Christmas morning feeling' when packages showed up in the mail, and crossing things off my list. Some addictions are easy to let go. I got some great deals -and I wasted some money on junk that wasn't worth the cost of shipping. In the end, I got all the parts I needed to put my piece(s) of junk back on the road -and many new parts were sourced too.

It seems odd to say that I am glad to hear you see the end in sight.

I will confess I am similarly afflicted, and the ebay offerings are very diluted with a bunch of junk. But now and again, something worth looking for still pops up. I recently paid dearly for a handful of nos baby tenax snaps, but it turns out the guy had over 40 more in his shed and sold them all to me at a very fair and discounted price. Where else would you find something like that? He also turned out to be a great guy and I was glad to make a friend. So, I guess I still need to go through the steps . . . . .

I can see I'm not the only one! That garage of British cars looks a lot like Marv's back shed! And I COULD use an extra temp gage?!?

I think the one on e bay is a bit too pricey to put on a car.

There is a guy just south of here who does reproduction gauges. Looks really good and they are a usable price.

I remember a lot of time spent on ebay and looking at the Roadster Factory weekly specials when I was restoring the TR250. Too many steering wheel covers and dealer types who think their used bits are made of gold these days.

I just hope I can be cured

I agree. These days some parts are becoming rarer and harder to find, and condition seems unimportant to some sellers. That said, a real NOS or excellent example finds its way to eBay once in a while for fair $$. I think it really just depends on when collectors thin out their collection and parts hordes. Sometimes an elusive part that I've been searching for shows up too and add it my personal horde. And there are the parts dealers that cut up TRs to sell bits for a living, I guess like an online pick-a-part. But it's easy to forget that eBay is a listing service, not a seller, so you are dealing with another individual, or dealer, often an enthusiast, sometime another (participating) forum member, but at the mercy of eBay's policies for payments. I have observed through the years on forums that it's been too coincidental to see an asked for item (on the forum) to magically appear on eBay the same or next day, so I expect that lurkers are registered to target items to sell. It's a different world.

Funny. I use Firefox and run noscript to block all scripts loaded by default. It's amazing how many sites are behind the scenes. Googleadservices is one of the biggest privacy offenders that I see. Amazon plays games switching the prices around to hook you too.

Great. 3 weeks clean and I cashed in all my chips on a steering wheel and a clutch cover just now. I admit it. "Hello, my name is John and I'm an addict".
