Cross Member Bushings

I am currently in the process of pulling my cross member to replace the pads and put on a new oil pan gasket. My question is, does the steering rack have to be unbolted from the cross member or can I just undo the pinch bolt on the steering shaft universal and drop the cross member with the steering rack attached? Oddly enough my cross member bolts were no trouble to get loose, one was tight, two were a little bit tight and one was actually loose.

Regards John

You should be able to leave it attached. It doesn't take much space to get the pads in. And since it's only four bolts, you can always take them out after you drop the cross member if you find you need to drop it farther.
