Got an email yesterday from HomeDepot that my online statement is ready, and minimum payment of $23.72 is due by 5/24. Surprising, as I hadn't used my HD card (CitiBank) in several months.

Went to HD website to check the statement: current statement showed a balance of $93, which included a $70 "balance due", a $20 late payment fee, plus a "minimum" $2.00 finance charge. Also a 74¢ "cash advance".

74¢ ???

Hmmm. Didn't think I was that desperate!

Looked at the previous month's statement. No charges, no balance due, no interest, and previous balance of $270 paid in full.

Looked at the month before. $270 new charge. Correct.

So ... if two months ago I had a $270 balance, and one month ago HD shows I paid that $270 in full ... where'd the "balance due" come from?

Called customer service. They had no record of my using the card since I paid that $270 balance two months ago. Obviously a "computer error", which will be removed within 2 days.

But a computer error I would never have caught if I hadn't compared my last three statements.

Just a heads-up for online payments (and online statements) folks.
