I've seen a few posts where folks are using a socket and breaker bar that is supported by a block of wood or something to shore the breaker bar to loosen the nut by momentarily actuating the starter. Is there any danger to breaking a tooth of the flywheel when you do this?
I wouldn't try it with a breaker bar - too much chance that it will fold at the hinge and whack something, hard (maybe you). A large conventional wrench in the correct size will do it, though some are really hard to undo - I jumped up and down with a force of approx. 500 ft-lbs trying to undo an Austin Healey 100 engine front bolt. The impact air wrench was the only thing that could shock it free.
I have never heard of anyone damaging a ring gear doing this.
I changed mine on the MGB motor using one of the Makita 20V battery impact guns. Depending on how easy the engine turns you may need to keep the flywheel from turning, but in my case the impact gun zipped it right off no problem. Did need to brace the flywheel to keep it from turning so I could tighten the new one to the correct torque.
