crank nut and timing chain

I would like to "inspect" my cam drive chain and just got my manual. Seems like it would be easest to remove the steering parts rather than lift the engine. I will listen to the voice of reason if you respond, Please.

liftin an engine (any engine) can be pretty easy...and if carfull not much to disconnect, if your only going a couple of inches. radiator has to come out, if your working on the front cover. fuel line saftey please. probaly leave the electrical connected with the battery unhooked, (safety again Please.
the front nut ....well that can be a real pain. 1 13/16 socket and a 3/4 drive/breaker bar will be a good start. it is a normal nut, (unscrew ccw) and very tight.

Hows it coming along ? get your bearings done?

Thanks,Mark, I just got my shop manual and still deciding what to do. I have no history on the car. The crankpin journals mic at "new"... rod at 1.875" and all the bearings look ok except one rod. I think about a time chain failure causing valve crunch more than anything, so I would like to , at least look at the timing chain. I have another hint, the motor mounts look newish.
 
Interesting Idea there...remove the steering rack and get to it...will that work? Will you have clearance without lifting the engine? Do you need to disconnect the steering column to lif the engine far enough to access the cover and might as well move the rack to access it?

Let us know how you make out...inquiring minds want to know!

I have changed the camshaft on my B just by lifting the engine. Much easier than remove the steeering rack and having to re-align the car.

Un-bolt the motor mounts, put an hydraulic jack under the tranny and up you go.
