GT6 Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

Some folks get pretty fussy about the "definition" here: If it's a Spitfire tub mounted on full GT6 chassis, etc., etc., and keeping the GT6 commission number, it's a GT6 convertible (or roadster if you will); if it's a Spitfire with the six dropped in and the bonnet modified (or a GT6 bonnet used, and the Spitfire commission number is kept, it's a Spitfire 6! I guess it depends upon which donor vehicle has the paperwork....

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

How can anyone be fussy over definition of a Triumph that the makers never built? It's a special, and the owner can surely call it what he wants, can't he?

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

GT6 convertible/roadster, Spitfire 6, one thing I DON'T think you can call it is ugly! That's rather sharp!!

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

I wonder how it drives/handles?

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

Do the GT6 and the Spitfire have the same, identical frame? Is the Spit frame beefier because it's a convertible or is the GT6 beefier because it has a bigger engine?

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

If the car is in anyways half decent condition that is a not too bad of a price considering all the work listed.

The basic chassis was the same for both cars.

So whether you start with a GT6 and put a Spit body on it, or start with a Spit and put a 6-cylinder it in, the end result is the same. How you get there just depends on what you started with.

GT6 bonnet usually needed to fit over the 6 cylinder engine too.

Re: Craigslist GT6 "Roadster" !

I say its a modded spitfire or GT6 based on what it is registered as. Since vehicles are registered with their commission number (being that its the number on the title) as Andrew said. However, with all this body, engine, chassis swapping going on, I bet there could be a bunch of title washing going on in the hobby. (GT6es with spitfire #s, spitfires with GT6 #)

Personally, as rare as Im told these cars are, I have no idea why on earth anyone would chop the top off a GT6. Its a crime punishable by hanging... ...though a trial will be given beforehand. The ONLY accessible excuse is 1) have a GT6 but really want a convertible and since the car is pretty much a part of the family, you couldnt see parting with it, or 2) it rolled, and the top is so damaged, it just easier to chop it off. I may be blessed with the one I have, because I dont see how rust would be that big of an issue, and if you are "lightening" the car for race purposes, again, why not start with a spitfire?

Seriously, think about future generations. I see stock model Ts and Model As, and wonder why on earth they look so odd, as so many pre war cars get chopped, I dont know whats original. I was just talking to my husband about how since everyone paints their GT6 engine red (me including) so many people out there believe THAT is stock. Looks great, but we're running out of stock original examples.
