counter under the hood

I know this was just talked about a while back...but I forgot what the counter connected to the speedo cable under the hood was for. The B that I just bought off E-Bay has one on it. Thx.

Wasn't it miles to next service?

Correct - it was a service interval counter. The dealership could reset it. I'd be interested if anyone is using it now, and if so how, including how to reset it.

I like it because I can remove the speedo cables there and lubricate them without crawling under the car or the dash.

I was showing it to mt wife this morning and it says on it"Life Counter". She asked who's life??? With my less than excellent luck lately...I wonder.

My TR6 has one....it's stuck on '000'....does that mean someones life is over? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I've got one in my 76 B and the best explanation I've heard is that the car has a certain life expectancy and this counter counts down the life in a percentage of life left in the car. It has nothing to do with service intervals and I don't see any way to reset it.

When it reaches zero you're supposed to sell it to me for $20 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

In the maintenace section of my Bentley manual I found a brief description and resetting instructions. It requires a special tool. Since I have never seen a service interval counter, I don't know what the reset button looks like and what the reset tool looks like.

Oh great idea Rick. When they get to 0 off they go to Tonys for long term storage.

I need to look at some of the ones I have on a shelf - I've always thought of them as oddities!
