Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

Will Cosworth Vega Wheels fit on a SWA Car? I know they will fot a RWA Car. They are 6" wheels and I know the wheel studs need to be changed to 1/2". Max recommended tire size without rubbing?

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

Jim, I'm not certain, but I think they will cause interference in the rear on a SWA. The offset is just a bit much. Even with 175s it would be close. 185s are a tight fit with stock rostyles at 4.5" so going up to a 6" wide wheel with more offset doesn't look good for a SWA.
Lug size for the Chevy Vega and Monza wheels was 7/16" which is a pretty easy upgrade for a Midget hub.

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

I don't know about a SWA but I have them on a RWA with 7/16" studs. You don't need to go to 1/2" The lug nuts are a little tough to find but they are available.

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

I did this years ago with a different racing Sprite. It won't work unless you flare the fenders pretty well.

By the way, my car started out as a SWA. It would rub the inner fender lightly with 175/60-13s (Yoko A032Rs) on stock rims. Until I added a panhard rod.

I opened the fenders out to RWA-style and am now running 185/60-13s (Toyo 888s) on stock rims.
With a 3/16" spacer, the 185s will *just* clear the leaf springs.

I don't know, so I'll just bring it up...
Are we sure that the Cosworth Vega used the same wheels as the normal Vega and Monza? The normal ones had four lug nuts, but I think the Cosworth might hav had five.

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

The lug pattern was the same, but the Cosworth wheels were of a special design, different from the rest of the GM offereings. Here is a link to the various wheels offered on the Vega/Monza and varients. The Cosworth wheel is very similar to the style shown as "G". https://monza.homestead.com/wheels.html

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

I spoke to the owner of the Cosworth Wheels. The wheels came with special lug nuts that allow them to work on a 3/8" wheel stud. However he is using them on an Arkley Kit and does not need to worry about rear fenders rubbing. He confirmed as Bill Young stated that they will not work on a SWA car. Now if I got out the SawZall.... Oops, daydreaming again and thinking about another project.

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

Before an unfortunate meeting in an intersection resulted in an Arkley conversion, I modified the wheel wells on my '69 sprite to accommodate stock Vega wheels:

Looked pretty cool I thought.

Re: Cosworth Vega 6" Wheels and SWA

So what sized tires were you running on those Vega Wheels? Must have been something rather short as it look like you've got more rear tire showing in those pics than I do with a 155/80 tire on my SWA Sprite.

Define please, "modified the wheel wells" Baseball bat trick or somethings more?
