Howdy all!

So, I was on my way to work on Friday in my 250, and started to hear nasty crunchy noises from my transmission. I had her towed to my local garage -- nice guys but pricey. They quoted me a whole mess of cash to rebuild the transmission. I'm curious what people have seen for a normal range for a complete overhaul?

With the prices from Quantum, I don't think you're going to find anyone local that would be close to what they charge. Hope you didn't break any hard parts like gears. Figure about $100 a pound for any of those bits. See how the output shafts are $250 and about 2.5#. If you can DIY, you can get away pretty cheap. Getting the stupid trans out of the car is where all the work is. Once it's on the bench, it's kind of interesting work.

That crunching noise is usually the lay shaft bearings saying good by. That takes out the layshaft, layshaft bearings and scores the internal bearing surface of the lay gear. I used to get layshafts for $35 and you can get enclosed bearings to get around the scored shaft for about $5 and a good bearing supply house. You'd need to get some layshaft shims because they can get scored. As said it's not too dificult and the work is interesting. The biggest thing is to clean the insides completly to get all the fileings out or they will undo all your work. Getting the trans out is not that difficult. Having a good 18v drill driver with a socket driver really helps. You can zip out the seat and tunnel bolts real quick. Take out the seats first. 4 bolts and their out and then you have room to manuver(sp).
