Cost of Engine Rebuild

How much should I expect to pay (ball park) for a complete engine rebuild (top and bottom end on an engine that is in rough shape)?

sfovc20003. Are you setting down? The cost of rebuilding the Healey engine from a reputable rebuilder can run $6000.00 or more. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif---FWIW---Keoke

Thanks. That was about what I figured. It sounds like a bargain compared to my V-12 72 Jag E-Type!

I always recommend that anybody who is thinking about doing an engine rebuild on an LBC (or any sportscar) should get a PAECO catalog. Even if you don't have PAECO do your work it's an excellent reference. They do a wonderful job detailing the various types of machine operations and components as well as relative costs. (Don't be put off by their lame website. Call and get their printed catalog.)

PAECO's prices may appear higher than the machine shop down the street but you have to compare apples to apples. A race shop will typically do more operations, with greater precision, using higher grade components. You may find a specialist that charges less for similar work but it won't be a lot less. He may also charge more but if the guy really knows what he's doing it's worth it.

PAECO's 2004 catalog lists a range of prices for an AH engine rebuild from US$3600 for machine work only (you assemble it) on an AH 100-4 basic street motor to US$9400 for a fully assembled AH 3000 stage 4 race motor. The price also goes up if your core has problems that cannot be fixed or you want additional work/parts.

Do you think Paeco would trade web design for engine work? I'm only half kidding as I don't have an engine that needs to be rebuilt today, but a nice 200HP street motor for my BJ8 sounds nice.... Hmmmm....

Does Paeco still recommend shipping your engine via a Grayhound bus?

The PAECO catalog suggests you palletize your shipment and have it picked up by a "motor freight company" then further states that "Engines are too heavy for bus, UPS or parcel post."

OBTW:

Just to be clear, when I recommend that everybody get a PAECO catalog it's because I believe it contains a great deal of useful info. I am neither recommending using their services nor avoiding them.

I haven't personally utilized PAECO's services so I can't comment on them from experience. Rumor and innuendo from fellow LBC clubbers, gearheads and random web searches seems to indicate that there are some who are satisfied doing business with them and others who are not.

In general my own preference is finding vendors with a strong reputation for high quality work and good customer service. I have never regretted paying more for quality. Whenever possible I prefer someone local that I can deal with directly but if the best vendor is far away then so be it. It's worth the added hassle.
