Copper spray and coated head gaskets?

The head is back from the machine shop,milled and clean. The head gasket is in from Team Triumph. The gasket looks great,it's a Cooper gasket from the UK. However it is a coated gasket. The coating is very lightly tacky. Will the copper spray be ok with the coating? What year did they start recessing Spitfire bores? (72?) I thought the metal rings in the gasket would be thicker, to fit in the recesses. How much different is a early gasket from a later gasket? Thanks
