Cooling fans will not run - engine very hot.

After some short time running in the city today looking for a parking lot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif The engien become very hot. I stopped to check the water level and found it good. However I also saw that the two electrical fans didn't run and thats the reason for the engine to getting hot. My question is how do I fix this? Are there some relays, switches, fuses or what?
There are no error codes displayed in the ECU. Jaguar XJ 40 -94
 
It might be as simple as a switch malfunction. The little thermostat that switches the fans may well be defective. Disconnect it, touch the wires together and if the fans kick in there's your culprit.
 
Same happened to my Jag but it is a 1972 E Type. Depending on the plug type it might not be easy to touch the wires together. Regardless that is the way to check. My problems seemed to just be a bad conenction and with a few on and offs of the wire plugs it cleaned it up.

Some people wire the fans direct and leave them running all the time.

Same problem here on my 73 V12. It is called the otter switch and it is prone to failure. I bought a replacement T fitting with a modern thermostat switch but never installed it. I found that the wire spade on the otter switch just needed to be cleaned.
I have the new unit if you still need one and it is the same as the E-Type V12.
